GEORGE TOWN: Several officers, believed to be from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the state Health Department, were seen cordoning off parts of the Taman Free School wet market area at around 4pm Friday (Nov 13).

A notice by the Health Ministry was put up and it stated that the stalls at the wet market would be closed until Nov 27 for preventive maintenance.

It is learnt that traders were advised to do swab tests at the Jalan Perak health clinic within these two days. Earlier, there was talk that a suspected Covid-19 case had been linked to Taman Free School Market but the market remained open. Several state Health Department officers were seen carrying out routine checks at the Taman Free School market on Friday morning.Article type: metered

That part of the wet market is a courtyard surrounded by the Taman Free School flats occupied by mostly elderly residents living alone. They have no physical means to go elsewhere for their daily necessities. Thankfully the other part of the market is not closed.
