Online accommodation portal Afristay conducted a survey in February and found that the devastating effects of the Covid–19 pandemic and lockdowns still linger in South Africa.

Afristay said it conducted a study with its 15,000 travel accommodation establishments and received 750 replies.Only 1 in 3 travel establishments say their business has returned to normalOnly 53% of establishments have returned to their normal staffing levelsWhen South Africa entered its hard lockdown on 27 March 2020, it was initially set to only last for 21 days.South Africa’s borders remained closed to all but essential travel until mid-August.

Even after restrictions started lifting, the beta variant was detected in South Africa, resulting in many countries restricting travel.the first details of the omicron variantThe travel restrictions imposed on South Africa and its residents did little to stop the new Covid–19 variant from sweeping across the globe.However, representatives have pleaded with the government to relax Covid-19 regulations further and allow them to reopen for business fully and create jobs.
