Queensland fishers say the proposed gillnet ban across parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria will result in less locally caught fish for consumers and more imports, but conservationists say the country has an internationally responsibility to protect the critically endangered sawfish.

The state government proposal suggests closing about half the current gillnet fishery area of the gulf.Gulf of Carpentaria Commercial Fishers Association chairman David Wren said the closure would take 6 million portions, or 600,000 kilograms, of protein from the Australian market.He said it would also make his enterprise unviable.
