AGL has signalled an aggressive move to broaden its business away from legacy coal-burning infrastructure to data infrastructure with its bid for the telecommunications business Vocus.

Vocus owns more than 30,000 kilometres of broadband fibre and has around a 7 per cent share of the NBN market supplying corporate, wholesale and mass market customers. AGL said the strategic aim of the takeover was to own a broadband fibre asset base and develop a multi-product offering across energy and data.
