In framing mental health as a matter of productivity, Microsoft risks creating an environment that feels invasive and overbearing

The "experiences" include "emotional check-ins" that prompt users to select an emoji expressing how they felt about the work day, a "virtual commute" intended to give people time to reflect before and after workdays, and guided meditation sessions through a partnership with Headspace.

Microsoft suggests that it is important for employers to track and encourage these behaviors if they want to squeeze the most productivity out of employees without causing burnout.

For instance, since the Workplace Analytics platform frames negative emotional states as a productivity problem, an employee suffering from depression may feel pressure to hide their true sentiments so as not to draw further scrutiny from management. Similarly, the metrics tracked for the sake of reducing burnout could be used by managers to penalize employees or teams that aren't working as much, rather than provide them reprieve.

Microsoft's foray into emotional tracking will build on the rise of productivity tracking tools during the coronavirus pandemic. According to a PwC
