The question of who qualifies to run for president is pertinent, as the presidential election is due by September this year.SINGAPORE — About 50 public-service positions meet the public-sector service requirement to contest Singapore's next presidential election, said Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing.

A person who seeks to qualify by meeting the private-sector requirement has to have served as chief executive of such a company for at least three years, which means the pool is likely to be smaller than 1,200. A qualified candidate to run for president not only has to be a Singapore citizen, but also has to have lived in the Republic for at least a decade in the lead-up to Nomination Day.
