Ericsson estimates that more than 1 billion people will live in an area covered by 5G by the end of this year

that China's 5G market remained unaffected by the coronavirus pandemic and should see 5G subscription growth accelerate to reach 175 million by the end of 2020, or 11% of mobile connections.

This means China will account for nearly 80% of the total global 5G subscriptions in 2020. According to Ericsson, global 5G adoption will be "significantly faster" than that of 4G largely because of China's rapid uptake.

As we move into 2021, some of the most promising 5G applications will come to light, opening the door for a "killer app" to eventually emerge that can catalyze global 5G adoption beyond China. Ericsson expects 2021 will see the deployment of the first modules supporting Critical IoT use cases in 5G networks.

Several of the most promising 5G use cases are data-intensive and time-critical, such as cloud-based AR/VR, advanced cloud gaming, and autonomous vehicles. For example, Critical IoT and 5G networks will allow VR and AR hardware to offload intensive processing and rendering to the cloud, which will enable the hardware to become more energy efficient, lightweight, and potentially more cost-effective.
