Is it a good idea to know just how much your colleagues are earning? Talking about your salary is often taboo, but it has its advantages.

Ever looked at your co-workers and wished you knew how much they earned? Or you reached the final stage of a job interview, but when asked about salary expectations, you undersold yourself?

“If pay transparency does become more widely adopted, organisations that don’t disclose pay could struggle to attract top talent, much in the same way as those that forced hybrid staff back into the office full-time can struggle today,” Hays managing director Nick Deligiannis says.

As well as the inherent appeal that a competitive salary can provide, the pay range can act as a guide to determine whether candidates have the correct skills, experience and capability for the job, says SEEK Australia and New Zealand managing director Kendra Banks.
