Australia’s space industry is finally taking off, working on everything from the country’s first lunar rover and growing plants on the moon.

The small, rectangular robot rolls along the tile floor of a high-security room at RMIT University, surrounded by engineers.

“Our US team has three Lunar rovers already contracted to go to the moon, so as a company this would be our fourth. We’re building the facilities to enable that capability for Australia.” “Given the global space industry is forecast to be worth more than $1 trillion by 2040, it can set up our economy for future generations. By bringing together government, business, universities and TAFEs, we can truly be a driver and reap the benefits from a fast-growing sector in the economy,” he said.

“There’s a lot of misinformation that going to space is a waste of time. But there’s no doubt that over the past 30 years, it’s had a massive influence and that sector is very mature,” Dorrington said.
