One industry watcher said the diesel car population in Singapore will shrink rapidly by the mid-2030s. There are currently over 17,000 passenger cars in the country running on diesel.

Many dealers have already stopped importing such vehicles ahead of 1 January, when Singapore ceases to register new diesel cars and taxis. At the end of May, pure diesel models made up just 2.7% of all private cars on the road. The Land Transport Authority said diesel cars and taxis have made up fewer than 1% of new registrations since 2021. Charlotte Lim reports.
