Moya, who secured 122 votes in the recent election, takes over from former mayor Cilliers Brink, who was ousted in a motion of no confidence two weeks ago.
She is the sixth mayor in eight years and the second woman to hold the position after Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa.“When we approved the budget, it was approved with the funding plan. So that funding plan was endorsed by the national treasury. However, one thing we’ve noted is that it is slow in terms of us getting the revenue.”
She indicates that the new executive would focus on identifying gaps in the current funding plan to accelerate financial recovery. “When the executive comes in, one thing we need to focus on is to review the funding plan both the implementation and whatever gaps we can identify in the funding plan. But I am confident with that funding plan as the base we will be able to improve and move from that,” Moya adds.
Reflecting on her role, Moya says, “Nine months ago, I gave a speech because my party, when I came in as executive deputy mayor, gave me a mandate and said go in there and serve communities. My provincial chair told me to do less of the high heels and more of safety boots. There’s no ward councillor that has turned me back, we served alongside each other. We have helped each other, we got frustrated because we don’t have resources.
