The mine which began operations in 2010, amidst opposition from some residents, is one of 6 000 abandoned mines countrywide. It went bankrupt in February this year.The mine promised jobs, development and even scholarship opportunities to the Riverlea community.
Benchmarks’ David van Wyk says, “What government should do is, it should hold the owners of those mines accountable.”
