PETALING JAYA: The seven initiatives unveiled by the government to help sports industry players would help tide them over in the short term, say industry experts.

However, they added that many in the industry are still struggling to keep afloat simply because they are not earning any revenue at the moment.

“It may take yet another few more months for the sports sector to re-open, so while the RM3,000 is helpful for the first month, beyond that - I’m not sure whether it is enough to cover costs,” added Rahmat. Rahmat said that other helpful initiatives were the loan moratorium and the 50% rental exemption for those at the premises of ministry-managed facilities.

“It is a form of assistance, and we also have the wage subsidies - which is some form of support to businesses. However, the biggest cost in our fitness industry is our rental. I have two branches and the rent alone can go up to RM35,000,” he said. Noel Chelliah, who is the owner of the DailyMuscle LightHouse gym, said operators need direct aid to help them survive the pandemic.
