Esther Colwil, Asia Pacific president at executive search firm Korn Ferry, distils what she gained from sherpas during her expedition.

. They may have a personal dream of scaling Mount Everest, they have spent years training, put their life savings on the line and told friends and family about their forthcoming adventure. As Colwil says: “They have a real stake in being successful.”

“It’s not good for you. It’s not good for [the team]. It’s not good for the business. You go somewhere else,” she says.The sherpas, says Colwil, are sound observers. At high altitudes, Colwil struggled in the mornings, so the sherpas would pay her particular attention during the first few hours of the day.
