But 60 per cent of barramundi is currently imported from Asia, where it is known as sea bass, and the local aquaculture industry says it's time restaurants and cafes follow the same rule as retailers, who are compelled to tell customers if their barramundi is domestically grown.
"The Northern Territory introduced similar legislation a few years ago. Local seafood sales increased immensely, once they brought that into place," he says. Jo says she has no objection to sea bass imports, nor the desire for customers to buy a cheaper slice of fish.The industry wants signs similar to retail stores to label the country of origin.
