With flight costs increasing, passengers swarming the skies, but air traffic getting delayed across much of the U.S., 2022 was possibly the most turbulent and successful year in the aviation industry in recent history.
The number of travelers Jacksonville is seeing is slowly climbing back toward pre-pandemic levels, and although the JIA isn’t quite back to normal, it’s closer than ever. The 2018-2019 fiscal year saw over 7 million people come through the Jacksonville International Airport, while post-pandemic traveler number significantly dropped, and remained low until recently.
The summer months of this year were extremely successful, with more than 290,000 passengers each month between May and July, almost reaching 300,000 in July alone. “We were 50% above what we were last year in travelers. Over 3 million people leaving, which is incredible. No one saw this coming. No expert out there that I've ever read about predicted that we would have this kind of a post-Covid bump,” VanLoh said at the time.
