For the first time in more than two weeks, South Africa will be hit by Stage 4 load shedding, which is currently planned for Thursday evening.
Over the past 24 hours, a generation unit was returned to service at Duvha Power Station. In the same period, a generating unit each at Lethabo, Kendal and Kriel power stations was taken offline for repairs. The delays in returning a unit to service at Hendrina, Medupi and two units at Tutuka power stations have contributed to the capacity constraints, Eskom said in a statement.
On Sunday afternoon, however, Stage 1 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 until 16:00 on Monday. The power utility said in a short announcement that this was due to"significantly lower than anticipated demand for electricity." Load shedding remains suspended until Monday morning, when Stage 1 will be implemented
In a follow-up message, Eskom said this meant that Stage 2 will not be implemented on Sunday evening as had previously been communicated. * This update has been corrected with new information not initially communicated by Eskom. Load shedding will be suspended on Sunday, Eskom said, but it's a short reprieve as Stage 1 and Stage 2 will be implemented intermittently thereafter.
Eskom will provide an update as soon as any significant changes occur, the utility said in a statement.Due to some improvements in the generation capacity over the past 24 hours, Stage 3 load shedding will remain in force until further notice, Eskom announced on Wednesday afternoon. During the same period a generating unit each at Lethabo, and two units at Kriel power stations were taken offline for repairs. Stage 4 will then be implemented from 16:00 until 05:00 on Wednesday morning, Eskom said.
