City Power embarks on an operation targeting illegal electricity connections in Alexandra.

Johannesburg’s City Power says it has spent over R3 million in two months replacing mini substations that have blown up as a result of overloading at an informal settlement along London Road in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg. The power utility embarked on an operation targeting illegal connections in the area.

Law enforcement officials did not hesitate, firing rubber bullets at those who dared to interrupt the operation. “We need electricity that’s why we decided on the zinyoka nyoka. We are South Africans, we vote. We know this area is designated to Rea Vaya so they can give us houses. For now, we need electricity and toilets and water. We are human, can we live like humans with electricity.”However, the illegal connections affect those in nearby formal houses as they are often plunged into darkness due to overloading or the explosion of mini-transformers or substations.
