If you’ve had car issues lately, you likely had to wait. The auto industry nationwide is facing a mechanic shortage.Their bays are full, and phones are always ringing as they run with a skeleton crew.

“I started when I was 15. So from easy take it apart, nothing could go wrong, to computers, we’ve completely changed since we started,” said Burghardt.“If you look at your car today, it doesn’t look like the car you bought 10 years ago. And with the accelerations of EVs on the road, having the right skills to fix the cars on the road is equally a challenge today,” said Champagne.

The good news? Technician wages have increased, and incentives like tool tax write-offs have been implemented, as colleges like Camosun work overtime to try to close the gap.
