Zarchi Lwin pawned her only two gold bangles for $140 when the owner of the Myanmar factory where she sewed winter coats for British retailer Next Plc shut it down after orders dried up due to the coronavirus.

Since the 1960s, Asia has grown into the world’s garment factory, sending about $670 billion worth of clothes, shoes and bags a year to Europe, the United States and richer Asian countries, according to the International Labour Organization, a United Nations agency. Many factories that have reopened are struggling to enforce social distancing and good hygiene practices in often cramped conditions, two union officials told Reuters. “Most of the factories are not complying with the safety guidelines,” said Babul Akter, president of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, adding that dozens of garment workers had been infected with the virus. “Just placing hand-washing systems and checking temperatures at the entrances will not help.

In Cambodia, where about 60,000 garment workers have been “suspended,” according to the country’s manufacturer association, workers have been promised $70 per month - $40 from the government and $30 from the employer - but that amounts to just over a third of the current minimum wage. She and her parents left their small village in the central Magwe region six years ago after selling their house to pay for treatment for her brother, who eventually died from kidney disease. At first, they worked as cleaners and lived in a dormitory. Then Zarchi Lwin trained herself to sew clothes and secured a sought-after job at one of the nearby factories, earning $146 per month: enough for food, rent of a small wooden shack, and medical treatment.

thuttag Ruma poppymcp This is the sad reality of most garment workers, self-employed individuals and small scale businesses out there due to COVID-19. Especially in Asia. There should be a strong platform for them to voice their concerns.

thuttag Ruma poppymcp She is an employee and therefore should be paid job keeper allowance. Do these big boys really think these; mainly women, are going to still be around to pick up the work when corona is over?

thuttag Ruma poppymcp Now we can only hope that the vaccine was developed as soon as possible.

With the demise of “fast fashion” that these poor workers produced, will people finally see the sad results of exploitive labor?

Heartbreaking.

THE ONE W.H.O. STARTED THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS MUST PAY

The damage of this all to the developing world will be staggering. We nee to give them help without giving money to their loser government officials who will just steal it. That is what usually happens, but not always.

This is happening HERE in the US....😢😢🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is all america's fault for spreading nasty viruses to the globe. Both AIDS and H1N1 originated from USA but they put the blame on africa and mexico respectively. Now, they are blaming covid19 on china . Sneaky and conniving white politicians

Direct consequence of dealing with China

So sheltering in place “even if it saves one life” has other implications? 🤔

And this is what the socialist democrats want for us.

😥This is just terrible

That’s happening in LA too my friends husband had to lay off 140 of his workers

Sounds like England

CCP virus did this.

thuttag Ruma poppymcp COVID did what child labor laws couldn’t.

Policy makers may not have paid attention to just how closely health and economic stability are tied when implementing their lockdown policies. Here's a link to a story predicting hundreds of thousands of children dead thanks to economic collapse.

We all need to order bespoke clothes so these folks can work at home and for themselves

So it the American dream for millions. Any news stories on that?

So sorry.

China screwed over the entire world with their coverup and lies. China needs to be held accountable.

Just like everywhere else! So sorry, we have to change and survive!

Thanks to CCP cover up in Dec

The Chinese CCP are the people who SHATTERED your life. So go SLAP them.

今後とも活躍されますように、期待しています
