How an ex-Pilates instructor landed a coding job at $37 billion Twilio without a degree

Become an InsiderLayla Porter, a developer at cloud communications platform Twilio, taught herself to code using free online courses after a diverse career as a professional horse rider, graphic designer, and pilates instructor.

An increasing number of free online resources have created a influx of self-taught coders and lowered the barriers to entry into the field, helping to address its diversity problem. The ability to build something from scratch using code had always appealed to Porter. But it was working on the booking platform for her own Pilates studio that she decided she wanted to make a career out of it.

Porter found a position at a small agency paying minimum wage where she built up her skills. She also became an active member of coding groups such as the .NET community, and it was giving a talk at one of these meetups that landed her the job at Twilio.
