The new hack on Tesla comes after researchers have detailed a variety of attacks on infotainment systems as well as mobility apps of auto manufacturers earlier in 2020

how the Tesla Model X can be stolen in a few minutes by exploiting a flaw in how the car uses the Bluetooth Low Energy signals to communicate with the key fob used to enter and start the Tesla.

Researchers found the Tesla Model X can be stolen by hacking the vehicle's Bluetooth-enabled key fob.Using a modified Electronic Control Unit obtained from a salvaged Tesla Model X, Lennert Wouters, a PhD student at the university, was able to drive away in the $80,000 car using equipment that cost less than $300.

Once the car was unlocked, the team used the diagnostic connector inside to pair the modified key fob to the car, which then enabled them to drive away. The vulnerability was reported to Tesla in August 2020, and the company has started to release an over-the-air software update to mitigate these issues, according to the researchers.

While the attack isn't easy to pull off, it serves to highlight the vulnerability of different systems in connected vehicles. The attack requires the hacker to lug around some equipment and get within 50 feet of the victim. That said, once the key fob was compromised, it took Wouters around 90 seconds to get in and drive off with the Tesla, as shown in a dramatized
