The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds says the work that rangers do in far-flung and often extremely isolated wilderness areas is vital to the survival of the African Penguin.
SANCCOB is taking government to court over feeding ground closures around penguin colonies. The organisation says the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment did not take on-board a critical recommendation when they announced the closure of fishing grounds around six breeding colonies. SANCCOB’s Head of Conservation, Nicky Stander, “At the moment the closures are not really solving the problem of the competition between the penguins and the industry. So, we’re asking the court to assist us in that matter. It’s not a silver bullet, it’s not going to solve all our problems of course but we think it’s going to give the penguins a fighting chance to find enough food to survive going into the future.
