PETALING JAYA: Companies will adhere to the government’s regulations when they resume operations though some voiced concerns on the mechanism for mandatory health screening for workers.

Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Datuk Shamsuddin Bardan said employers were willing to resume operations partially under the conditions set by the government.“We do not want the risk of employees being infected with the Covid-19 virus, ” he said in welcoming the government’s decision to allow operations to resume in stages so that economic activity could be stimulated.

Master Builders Association Malaysia president Foo Chek Lee, speaking for the construction industry, concurred, saying that there was no issue with the conditions. However, he wanted the government to relax such rules in the long-term. “We will have to face additional costs due to the rules. For instance, while we usually provide transport to workers to the construction site, we have to provide more buses now to practise social distancing, ” he said.

An executive director of a large construction company, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “We have agreed to the mass screening of our workers as we take public health as a priority. “We do not want a repeat of what happened in Singapore, where construction workers were the main cluster for the second outbreak. It is a tedious process but it must be done.”
