SINGAPORE - For Ms Lovine Tan, it was a no-brainer when it came down to what she aspired to work as. Growing up, she would listen to her father's stories about working as an engineer at the port.

SINGAPORE - For Ms Lovine Tan, it was a no-brainer when it came down to what she aspired to work as. Growing up, she would listen to her father's stories about working as an engineer at the port.

The GP lessons often focused on the maritime industry as a topic, and she began researching the industry further to later apply for a degree in Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies at Nanyang Technological University . Last month, Ms Tan was one of the 18 students appointed by the Maritime and Port Authority to join its first batch of MaritimeSG Youth Ambassadors .

Ms Tan said of her appointment:"I think the industry is better known now than previous years, but more can definitely be done for more young people to understand it. The 20-year-old MYA, who is interested in working in the commercial side of the industry, hopes to reach out to secondary school students and explain more about the different ways to improve efficiency in shipping through digitalisation and the concept of decarbonisation.Job redesign, bonuses and Asean attachments part of plan to attract S'poreans to maritime sector
