The Queensland government has proposed a nine per cent increase to green zone areas in the Great Sandy Marine Park in a bid to protect threatened species.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon says the proposed zone changes will promote tourism and protect the environment.abc.net.au/news/great-sandy-marine-park-green-zone-plans-restricts-fishers/101469794It is considered a win for conservationists and recreational fishers, but seafood lovers and commercial fisheries will pay the price for proposed changes to one of Queensland's greatest marine parks, an industry body says.

"We want to enhance some of the tourism and recreational fishing opportunities and protect the threatened species that live in this area," Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said. "We're under state government legislation that clearly sets out that the dolphins must be fed product from the Great Sandy Marine Park," owner Benjamin Dunston said.

'It is a stroke of the regulator's pen, who has never been on the ground and doesn't see what's going on."In a region known for fresh and local seafood, restaurant owners said restrictions would send prices up and force businesses to look further afield for produce. "They have selected a little bit of each type of habitat to be protected fully from fishing activities," Senior Specialist on Coastal Communities Jim Higgs said.

The prices were too low at the start. If people paid more they would consume less. These businesses should focus on evolving.

Please let the fishing industry empty the sea of fish and make millions. It is good for the country. When there are no more fish to fish, the taxpayers can bail them out of trouble.

Industry threatens on back of need for conservation

Lower exports.

Won't be eating fish then

the states are trying to limit our own fishermen yet Fed is negligent to allow Chinese n Indonesian fishermen coming all the way to Ashmore reef n beyond We did not want a fight with Jakarta They let it loose A disgrace

Let’s open up all marine parks so that we will be in this very situation in a few years time..

They always say that!

Higher seafood prices are inevitable if Australia's population continues to be increased. Also bag limits for recreational fishermen will have to be decreased, little by little.

what is it with these days…. boohoo articles. Go get em tanya_plibersek

Seafood just another expensive primary product off the menu for Australians ?

Fish prices to rise if we continue fishing these populations to ecological collapse

It’s in the interest of the fishing industry to embrace sustainability. Yes, prices will respond to supply and demand. But unsustainable practices will inevitably lead to supply shortages and price hikes.

I really don't care as long as there is a future for my daughter and food supply Why is the ABC so concerned with capitalism and using finite resources till they are gone? The Fourth Estate is meant to protect people with the truth not ideology🤬 auspol AusPol2022 Insiders

Wait til people find out prices when there's no fish left in the ocean.

Good.

If you don't protect your fisheries, you won't have an industry.

Good its called husbandry.. no more greed

Good

Humans deplete the oceans, to feed our cats. We are truly girt.

Better to not eat fish at all. They are so much more beautiful when they are swimming free in the ocean. It’s not worth it for a few minutes of eating pleasure.

Imagine the price of fish when there’s little to none left in the ocean

Good.

Better than no fish

I understand that flake is a sacred fish.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will industrialise it to the point of making all fish extinct.

Up there with the 'good news' story you ran about Tasmanian fishers now being able to catch warm water fish.....

well, yes... so?

Most seafood already costs way more than I am prepared tp pay.

Every time the No- fishing zones are expanded the industry body claims all sorts of potential problems but research previously has shown fish stocks improved because breeding zones were protected.

Sounds a bit fishy😁

Sounds ok for a healthier fisheries

This does my head in. Fish is supposed to be a brain food. Research shows EVERY no-catch marine reserve increases fish stocks dramatically outside it. Marine reserves make more fish available, not less.

but we get healthy fish populations well into the future, which seems like a good thing, no?

They have already spiked.

Don’t no fish zones breed more fish?

26 million people with one of the worlds longest coast lines is short of fish...............crazy

Industry lies. Just like the logging industry warning if the sky falling in it we stop paying them taxpayer money to bulldoze native forest into woodchips to export

better to save what we have for the future rather than wipe it out for short term profits

Fish Industry has always pushed that line. It's a truism. As the fish industry fishes out zones fish prices rise. Without sustainability we'll have no fish, other than farmed fish (eg salmon) in our diets.

So what? You want luxury, pay for it. Nature belongs to all of us and our children. Its protection is more important than cheap seafood.

Scientists warn some fish will go extinct if we don't stop exploiting them so harshly. Should we really listen the industry that concentrates on the profits?

Of course they do…

I recall the manager of Sydney fish markets telling me 70% of what they sell is imported.

Prices would be fine if we didn’t export to the vermin up north

I think it's time Greens were placed under house arrest

'if you don't let us make these fish extinct, it'll be a bit more expensive to buy them'. The logic is impeccable.
