The culturally significant area of Murujuga has been formally nominated by the federal government for World Heritage listing, but some groups are concerned nearby heavy industry will delay an approval.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek travelled to Murujuga on Friday to announce the formal nomination. If accepted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation , Murujuga would be the second site in Australia listed for World Heritage Status for Aboriginal cultural heritage., a dormant volcano located in south-western Victoria, was the first Australian site to be included on the heritage list exclusively for its Indigenous cultural heritage values.

MAC CEO Peter Jeffries said the five traditional owner groups of Murujuga had aspired for the area to be givenHe said the groups worked to ensure traditional knowledge and lore were at the centre of decision making. In a statement, the federal government said a proposed World Heritage boundary of nearly 100,000 hectares across land and sea had been "comprehensively negotiated".

The rock art is safe. There is no industry there, only one road in, a rail corridor, the harbour, and the iron ore terminal, all of which have been there for a long time.

. The ABC foegot to include any rock art... It must be great stuff...

Beautiful photography. Thats really wonderful nature. I'd be totally happy to live in a place like that... away from people and without a care in the world ;p Clay mountains ( make shelter from that )... sandy soil not great for growing stuff. You'd be living on fish.
