A smuggling investigation has crimped U.S. biotech’s access to medical-research monkeys, potentially slowing the pipeline for new drugs

another major supplier, are down by more than 70% over the past year. The contract drug researcher in November disclosed that executives at its main Cambodian supplier were among those charged in the indictment. Two of Inotiv’s subsidiaries have received grand-jury subpoenas.Study delays already might be affecting biotech companies, though how significantly isn’t clear since executives refrain from talking publicly about animal testing.

Future shipments from Cambodia are now being held up until new procedures such as genetic testing can be developed, in agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to weed out wild-caught monkeys. Mr. Bailey says the actions taken by the Fish and Wildlife Service have “unilaterally shut down the drug-development process in the U.S.”

Eric Kleiman, a researcher at the Animal Welfare Institute, an advocacy organization, says that suspending all imports from Cambodia is a necessary measure until there is a foolproof way of determining the origin of the monkeys. The nation’sabout the arrests denied the allegations and made no mention of efforts to crack down on smuggling. “Given Cambodia’s response to the allegations were not exactly fulsome, we believe there should be more controls on the demand side,” Mr. Kleiman said.

Contact CPAC, pretty sure they have your spare monkey hoard

I find it demonic to still use innocent animals for drug/cosmetic testing. In a day when we grow organs in a petri dish, we still subject animals to incredible pain and suffering for any reason!. Not to mention that, some animals' DNA has nothing to do with human DNA.

TLDR: US gov't recently tightened regs on animal trafficking and now scientists are upset that it's harder to get monkeys to do inhumane experiments on; this has, in turn, had financial impact on pharmaceutical drug development research so some billionaires are sad 🐵💊💵🤑📉😪😭

Or, potentially, treating beings with dignity. Would human life be worth saving, if it rests on piles of cadavers and suffering?
