I used to buy my station coffee from a woman with a master’s degree from Warsaw University. Marta made a good long black and filled me in on the latest hot anthropology topics, while she simultaneously kept an eye out for light-fingered passengers pinching newspapers from outside the kiosk. I enjoyed my daily hit of coffee culture, despite my discomfiting awareness that Marta might prefer more intellectually challenging work.
XantheClay I know a lot of young british people working in kitchen across the nation. As chefs, assistants and pot washes, happy and dependable. This is a fallacy and an excuse to keep wages low by importing labour. It’s a LIE
XantheClay Did the UK even have restaurants before mass migration? I say “no”.
XantheClay Title should read ‘British people don’t want jobs that exploit them’
XantheClay A tough challenge but maybe Xanthe can try making her own coffee?
XantheClay no more slave wages might help
XantheClay Pay a decent wage and decent people will start working for you !
XantheClay That's because they don't ask.
XantheClay Oaps come out of retirement I'll and disabled people assessments will cure even more

This who will pick the cotton line has to end.
Try raising the pay for these jobs
Let´s be rid of the notion that the DHS is a career choice and get folks used to the idea of a pay packet and the social advantages of belonging to a different kind of community
Pay a decent wage and you'll get decent staff, the days of doffing our caps and tugging our forelocks for our betters has gone and will never return
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
Am I the only person left whose memory goes back beyond 2004? These jobs were done by UK students, foreign students and part time workers. Several of my university class were waiters or bar staff. I worked in a betting shop & warehouse.
Self service
So, was that 'woman with a master's degree from Warsaw University' proof that some universities don't match up too UK economic standards, or perhaps she was a 'student' at the nearest university e.g. LSE or Ruskin? What proof she was telling the truth?
I used to work on zero hours as a silver service waitress, i got paid a different amount every week, no stable hours, and the wages barely covered my petrol, had no kids, but when i worked for sainsburys, i got 400 pounds a month in tax credits, with one kid
UK thinks you need a masters degree to serve coffee, or does it just like to abuse foreigners ?
People also need to understand there is nothing wrong with a career in catering and yes you may start off making sandwiches but where you go from there is up to the effort and application you put in.
‘I used to buy my coffee from a polish woman with a masters degree. Now she’s gone, who am I going to find to pour me a latte?’ The struggle of the FBPE generation is real. People are suffering out there

From my experience working in hospitality it's a lot of work and long hours for very little money. Otherwise they wouldn't make enough money to run a business as people don't have money to spend due to.. oh wait stable jobs.
Don't do the work offered to you, then two options remain.. 1) No Benefit Payments or 2) Armed Force's Conscription That would force these wrapped up in cotton wool lazy people, the real world only exists if you gain experience, through menial employment etc
Cheap labour is what it is all about, from people where the cost of living is half here, often living in overcrowded housing, used to slave labouring. Train our young people properly.
Yes they do. But they also want to buy a home, have a family, take holidays. And while there is a surfeit of foreign labour with no long term stake in the country competing against them to beat wages down they'll never have those simple and very reasonable things.
That’s right. They don’t want jobs that pay a wage below that required for a modest living in this country, leaving them still on benefits, with the tax payer subsidising your business. Now have a think about a solution that doesn’t involve exploitation or tax payer handouts.
Make people do the work, unless there are circumstances where it’s not possible (like disability etc). If people are fit for work and offered a job which offers more money than benefits, then if they refuse that job, take the benefits away. To many refuse work.
are you sure they don't? i've seen in lots of cases that being unemployed is more profitable than working a low end job, that's likely where the issue lies, personaly, i work 2 jobs and get by just fine while apparently living in poverty, an extra part time job would help though
I'm sorry, but we've got to break our addiction to cheap, East European labour. It's not good enough for a progressive, independent country to shrug its shoulders and say, 'Brits won't do these jobs.' We have to make roles in hospitality and catering attractive to young people.
