A national code for visiting aged care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic has been released after thousands of complaints and a warning from the Prime Minister.Thousands of complaints were made by families and residents who were denied access to loved ones due to COVID-19It now includes 13 points agreed upon by the industry and advocacy groups

The 13-point code released today has been developed by peak bodies and consumer advocacy groups in response to some aged care facilitiesThousands of complaints were made by families and residents who were denied access to loved ones after strict measures were introduced across the country in response to the pandemic, including homes in NSW completely banning visitors.

"Having people stuck in their rooms, not being able to be visited by their loved ones and carers and other support people, that's not OK … so let's see how the industry goes with that," Mr Morrison said last month. The principles state visits to homes can take place in a number of ways, including through the use of technology or involve the use of windows, courtyards and balconies among other measures.

Mr Morrison said the risks associated with the coronavirus mean restrictions were obviously required but he also said the isolation of elderly people was detrimental to health. "There are, of course, legitimate reasons why there would be restrictions at aged care facilities, particularly and obviously in places where there have been outbreaks," Mr Morrison said.
