How a 22-year-old used a viral TikTok video to launch a startup that helps cure loneliness during COVID-19 and raised over $3 million

The two were worried about more than their own love lives. They had dropped out of school in the summer of 2018 after raising $850,000 in pre-seed funding to create a dating app startup called Dandy. They had landed a big angel investor, early Snap employee Nick Allen, who made introductions that helped them raise another $2.5 million formal seed round in early 2019 from First Round Capital.

And then they did something that turned out to be a brilliant marketing tactic: rather than turning to Facebook ads or Instagram influencers, they introduced their app via a video on TikTok.Newman and Massachi were of the Snapchat generation and weren't really TikTok experts. In fact, Newman's first foray into tech was to create abuilding filters for small companies who wanted in on Snapchat marketing.
