China plans to extend a controversial scheme that rewards and punishes citizens’ behavior to include degree plagiarism,This means that cheats may be unable to access public transport, mortgages, and even job promotions.

The country plans to include cheating at university as part of its social credit system, which rates people based on their behavior and determines their access to public transport, mortgages, universities, and even job promotions. "We will make any fraudulent acts involving degree papers part of one's credit to be included in the national information-sharing platform," the ministries of education and finance said in a joint document with the National Development and Reform Commission, perChina trialed its controversial social credit scheme regionally in 2009 before starting a national pilot in 2014.
