Our diplomats, including political appointees, were always supposed to stay above domestic politics. Blatant partisanship abroad not only blemishes our national brand, it harmfully blends official and political roles. Giving a speech for a party conference raised questions overseas as to whether Pompeo is speaking for our country or his party.
