They are among the top goals of California environmentalists: preserving endangered species and replacing fossil fuels with clean energy.
Now, federal wildlife authorities are taking the unprecedented and controversial step of helping a wind energy company breed the scavengers in captivity, so that they can replace any birds that are killed by the massive wind converters. Garry George, clean energy director at the National Audubon Society, said, “If wind energy and the expanding condor population can’t get along, we’re not going to get very far in staving off catastrophic climate change or saving this magnificent creature from extinction.”has been in jeopardy since the 1950s, when development began to encroach on the species’ habitat and the now-banned pesticide DDT made condor eggshells so thin they could not support life.
The facility, which generates power for Los Angeles, parts of Silicon Valley and San Diego and Orange counties, has a current capacity of 189 megawatts. It consists of 126 General Electric 1.5-megawatt turbines that began operating in 2012. The turbines are spaced roughly 700 feet apart and have a rotor diameter of 253 feet.
The funding would also provide about $10,000 a year for incremental related costs including veterinary treatments and transportation of condors to release sites.
Why not also paint them a color that says 'danger' to the birds so they can see them better, or cage the blades somehow, like a fan guard that we humans have to keep our fingers safe from the blades?
Is a ‘condor collision’ two condors running into each other cos there’s going to be so many of them? Or do you mean condors hitting wind turbines?
These birds aren't fools.
I just moved to your city, who wouldn't mind showing me interesting places?

Thank you, I know we don't live in a vacuum but it feels like a lot of folk think we do. You pollute, we become polluted. You extract, you replenish or it runs out And collateral damage happens but should not be acceptable to the point the best we do is shrug our shoulders.
Maybe we can get Ted Nugent to breed wolves and wildlife…
