‘It’s bleak’: hospitality industry prepares for another dire holiday season | ameliamcguiree

From recessions to natural disasters, Darlinghurst’s Italian staple Bill and Toni’s has seen it all over the past 56 years.

But after the state recorded thousands of cases this week, consumer confidence has fallen again and Mr Tropea is bracing himself for another tumultuous holiday season. Doltone House’s executive chairman Paul Signorelli says the staffing situation is so dire that he was relieved when event for 300 people was called off.“There’s been many cancellations and smaller bookings, but luckily the holes have been quickly filled by regulars so far,” he said.

At least half of the 80 bookings scheduled this week at Sydney events giant Doltone House have persevered with reduced guest lists in light of the state’s COVID-19 surge. Most of the events that have been postponed or dramatically modified at Doltone this week have been corporate Christmas parties or other work gatherings, while birthday parties or weddings have gone ahead. “Nothing will stop some of these couples from getting married,” he said.

The shortage isn’t limited to events. Employment business Seek reported job advertisements in the hospitality and tourism sector rose by 76 per cent in November compared with the same month last year, while applications per job hit a record low.
