Despite being a fairly mainstream industry now, discriminatory hiring practices and racial stigmas are among the challenges that Black tattoo artists say they face in the white-dominated field of tattoo artistry.

in Atlanta, said the industry still has a long way to go to become more inclusive.

"I felt that creating my own space was the best way to get my needs met," Layne said, adding that she worked at some locations that made her question her worth. "We are a group of people coming together to build something bigger than ourselves … our purpose is to give artists the tools to create their best artwork," Petralia told ABC News.

From seeing his son create illustrations to subjecting him to the atmosphere of his tattoo shop, Parker said being a positive influence is one of his most important jobs.

Does this ever get exhausting?

you know what im tired of this white dominate this field and lack tattoo artists push for diversity. if they are great artiest then open up a shop and display your work ppl don tlook at the art and say oh thats a great tattoo but it was done by a black person abc wants division

Like every week you have to find something else to call racist. It’s really impressive how you can stretch almost anything into white supremecy

Seriously? Be good at what you do, and no one will see your color.
