Business leaders rather than political leaders are setting the pace on climate change policy and emissions reductions in Australia. But the pressure is on to go further faster.

The bizarre result is not just that the Business Council of Australia has a slightly more ambitious 2030 target of 46 to 50 per cent emissions reduction than Labor’s 43 per cent as well as the Coalition’s 26 to 28 per cent – it’s that business is begging whichever government is elected to develop policies to encourage greater investment sooner.

The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will only increase that momentum.
