Melbourne faces a fresh rental housing crisis as tenants find properties have dried up in some areas of the city noeltowell | ausecon property

Bartender, wedding singer and part-time student Alexander Rohan is struggling to find rental accommodation. In the outer suburbs, where renters are more likely to be families with children, the shortage is more acute, with just 0.4 per cent of rental properties available for lease in the Cardinia council area in Melbourne’s outer south-east and in Sunbury in the city’s far north-west.

The most dramatic change to Melbourne’s rental landscape was in the city centre, where rental vacancies were at just 1.5 per cent in March, down from more than 11 per cent a year before. Mr Docking said all types of property were in high demand from renters, but three-bedroom houses were being hotly contested and demand for smaller apartments from young people returning to the market after the pandemic was driving the pick-up in the CBD.supports Domain’s view that the shortage of rentals is driven by surging demand rather than dwindling supply.

“There’s going to be significant disruption to families with kids in school and to their employment opportunities,” she said.“This is going to have an impact on kids or ... their mental health [and] the traffic on our roads as people need to travel further to reconnect with their communities. “When these families are finding accommodation, often it isn’t in the same place as their communities and support networks. One family found a home in Werribee, but the children’s school was over an hour and a half away, which obviously causes a host of other problems.”

This is such a bore. simonjohanson Makes a change from Anglo foodhalls on my land since they conquered us! simonjohanson I love the Mercato Centrale in Firenze, and always thought that the VIC market should incorporate something like that into their redevelopment. It’s good that we’re getting one here anyway, even if not associated with an actual market.
