Academic David Kim claimed he helped build Horn Barbecue for free, then was pushed out.

In Kim's complaint, which was filed in September 2021 and recently reviewed by SFGATE, the former business partner alleges that after meeting Horn in April 2019, he became an indispensable part of Horn's then-burgeoning business plans, assisting"with public relations and bringing in investors." Kim also claims that he invested $3,000 in exchange for a 5% stake in Horn Hospitality Group, and that he was named president of the business, putting in long hours without pay.

Horn"did not pay [Kim] for his work as President upon his departure, or at any other time, and also did not reimburse reasonably necessary business expenses," according to the suit.
