Some metros saw tremendous job gains in 2022, despite growing economic fears and recession worries. Others weren't so lucky. Here's how San Francisco and San Jose stack up.

Cities in the South and the Midwest were the big winners in 2022 job growth, while the West Coast is falling behind.

In the San Francisco metro area, the job growth numbers totaled 7.7% for 2022. Ahead of only Buffalo — the only major metro included in the survey with negative job growth figures — and Sacramento, San Francisco had the third-lowest job growth on the 60-city list. Meanwhile, year-over-year job growth stood at 9.1% in the San Jose metro area.

“We are seeing this huge spread of economic activity since the pandemic. We have typically kind of seen this concentration of economic growth in these large clusters, and If we wanted these high-paying jobs and to move up the professional ladder, you would move to these large cities and be tied to these cities,” Pardue said. “But since the pandemic and remote work, those ties have been severed.

At the other end of the spectrum were Buffalo, New York , Sacramento , San Francisco and Winston-Salem, North Carolina .
