The California Department of Motor Vehicles yanked the license after a pedestrian was injured in an accident involving a Cruise.

General Motors ‘ self-driving robotaxi company Cruise is off the road in San Francisco after an accident.

While three state regulations were cited, it all boils down to public safety concerns after an accident. “In incident being reviewed by the DMV, a human hit-and-run driver tragically struck and propelled the pedestrian into the path of the AV,” said GM in an emailed statement. “The AV braked aggressively before impact and because it detected a collision, it attempted to pull over to avoid further safety issues.

GM has owned part of Cruise since 2016. It’s been offering autonomous taxi rides since 2022. GM plans to scale the Cruise business across the country and believes autonomous taxis can generate tens of billions of dollars a year in sales by the end of the decade for the company.
