The nuclear power industry is pushing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to cut back on inspections at nuclear plants and throttle back what it tells the public about plant problems. The agency, whose board is dominated by Trump appointees, is listening.

group. A"high-priority" ask is to eliminate press releases about lower-level safety issues at plants — meaning the kind of problems that could trigger more inspections and oversight at a plant but not constitute an emergency.

Nuclear plant operators amplified their requests at an annual meeting in the Washington, D.C, area this week. When the NRC makes public the problems found at a plant, utilities get"pretty rapid calls from the press, SEC filings get impacted because of potential financial impact," Halnon said.Trump has said he wants toSo far, it's the more politically influential coal industry that's gotten significant action on the regulatory rollbacks that it sought from the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies.

"We shouldn't regulate to zero risk," said David Wright, a former South Carolina public-utility commissioner appointed to the NRC board last year.Tony Vegel, a Texas-based reactor safety official for the NRC, pushed back when industry executives publicly made their case for fewer NRC inspections.

technogaijin Hey, Chernobyl wasn't such a big deal, right? You can book a tour there now. Oh, but careful where you step ....

If Putin can't send nukes to USA why not just have the nuke power plants detonate in place. Very, very, very hmmm thinks Trump.

They're going to kill us all.

Trump admin let farmers wash lettuce w/ dirty water, coal cos dump sledge in waterways, lower meat inspection standards all costing lives and doing harm in the name of profits. Can’t wait what the first nuclear plant disaster does. Can you say Chernobyl?

What's the basis for this, inspections of course have an important purpose and in consideration of safety should be appropriately done at an interval that does not overstress workers but is otherwise often enough to ensure safety and prevent accidents.

They need more regulations to keep us safe. Not less so Trump can get his bribes.

inspections are on going they will never cut back on this. They have not pushed back on this this is nothing but lies

How could that go wrong?

Of course.

As a former CBNR Soldier this is in No Way a good idea.

Trump is destroying all progress of the last forty years! Don’t let him continue!

Criminal.

p.s. they no longer have the expertise. XX

now that is a sane idea

they cant turn them off. XX

Get ready for another 3MileIsland

Yes by all means let's have an other 3 mile island incident!

Hoax

What in the holy hell? Chernobyl

Why have we not mandated Liquid Sodium Metal reactors for the safety and well being of society? Water boils at 212° them BOOM liquid sodium metal boils at 2000°. One is safe one is not why don't we have safer reactors, greed maybe?

Oh nononononononono. That is SO not a good idea.

Didn't they try this in Chernobyl😏

Of course, with trump when it comes to money versus public health and safety, the decision is very quick and easy...

nasty_woman2 Is there ANYTHING this despicable administration hasn’t fucked up? ANYTHING?

cnn what about three mile island ? Oh look it’s. Jimmy Carter

What could go wrong, Grenoble comes to mind

Tell me that don’t scare ya!

CatastrophicAccident

Not highly suspicious at all!

AudreyGarden FFS you need to ImpeachTrumpNow and get rid of all his appointees before they destroy the planet! No need to wait for Mueller, the corruption is in plain sight. UnfitToBePresident

stupid nerds talking facts and preaching science talk (facts) tntradioempire who needs them

This will lead to a big fight with states who have nuclear power plants. The GOP used to be for States Rights. Now, not so much.

And Russia has had such excellent luck with nuclear power. They cleaned up a whole town with one.

I lived by Dresden, now closed, in Illinois. Staff would vent heavy water steam and now Chanahon has elevated radiation... Also they were throwing low level nuclear waste in regular garbage that wound up in Dump in Morris on Rt 6.

Insted of Trump administration protecting us and the country, they're doing the complete opposite.

Maybe they wanna get rid of our nuclear plants and hire the Saudis to run our power needs with that great new plan that Flynn and Jared were working out with them.

Please, dear God, end this festering, necrotic organism of corruption, avarice and apathy that is the Trump administration that is DESTROYING our nation’s soul and ever more quickly and alarmingly, her future. TheRochaSays kazweida PalmerReport

This sounds like a great idea. I find that nuclear power plants seem to operate more safely when the time between inspections is long and procrastinated. What could go wrong? healthyglow

Hillary gave away the Uranium anyway

Trump continually works to make his administration less transparent, less accountable, above the law, above the people, more authoritarian. These are dangerous time for our republic & we must stand against authoritarian leadership. We are approaching a dangerous tipping point.

Of course they are listening. They are working on dismantling the administrative state. They think no rules are better than any rules. Waiting for distruction of our lives.

Apparently some people would like us to forget Three Mile Island ever happened.

So will they “not tell us” if there is a leak?

I think it's a good thing to have inspection on nuclear plants, don't most?

Because obviously there's nothing that can go wrong......facepalm
