Build One South Africa youth leader Henry Masuku has criticised the City of Johannesburg’s attitude towards its residents, accusing the government of failing to properly consult people before making decisions.
He was part of a protest outside the Johannesburg City Council offices in Braamfontein, which is also demanding the resignation of Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda. The protest by the Johannesburg Crisis Alliance was triggered by among other things – the introduction of a R200 surcharge for prepaid electricity customers.“It speaks to the void that exists between the residents of the city and the government of the city.
Masuku further maintains that the Alliance was disgusted by the manner in which the government of Joburg had approached the matter. “They’ve taken to go around this issue of the surcharge. So, we’re calling on the mayor to please consult the residents of Joburg, but also to think for the people who cannot afford,” he explains.
