City Power has confiscated over 15 tons of stolen electrical materials valued at R800 000, during an operation in Leratong Village informal settlement, south of Johannesburg.
The material includes aerial bundle cables, copper, aluminum and bare wires. The operation targeted illegal connections with the aim of curbing theft and unauthorised electricity usage. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says many informal settlements in contribute to network overload. “Our electricity infrastructure was designed to accommodate a certain number of households and businesses in the area. The unlawful connections increase the load demand, overstretching our cables and transformers. This illegal conduct results in our infrastructure collapsing under extreme pressures, causing prolonged outages.
