West, capitalism is not working as well as it should. Jobs are plentiful, but growth is sluggish, inequality is too high and the environment is suffering. You might hope that governments would enact reforms to deal with this, but politics in many places is gridlocked or unstable. Who, then, is going to ride to the rescue? A growing number of people think the answer is to call on big business to help fix economic and social problems. Even America’s famously ruthless bosses agree.
Regardless, the popular and intellectual backlash against shareholder value is already altering corporate decision-making. Bosses are endorsing social causes that are popular with customers and staff. Firms are deploying capital for reasons other than efficiency: Microsoft is financing $500m of new housing in Seattle. President Donald Trump boasts of jawboning bosses on where to build factories. Some politicians hope to go further.
The way to make capitalism work better for all is not to limit accountability and dynamism, but to enhance them both. This requires that the purpose of companies should be set by their owners, not executives or campaigners. Some may obsess about short-term targets and quarterly results but that is usually because they are badly run. Some may select charitable objectives, and good luck to them. But most owners and firms will opt to maximise long-term value, as that is good business.
Maximize shareholder return by putting inefficient, wasteful, inferior, less preferred competitors - out of business ;)
Capitalism is based on greed. The economies of Europe and the US grew through the exploitation of other countries thus impoverishing them. This source of plunder is declining so capitalism in Europe and the US is feeding upon itself. It will eventually self destruct.

This is capitalism: General Electric: Freeze the pensions of 20,000 workers in order to cut costs. Also General Electric: Avoid billions in federal taxes for years while handing out huge paychecks for execs ($15M for CEO Larry Culp last year).
Competition that operates on a level playing field is the solution (adding value to their communities etc.), not Corporatism propped up governments.
defeats its own argument by highlighting the PROBLEMS CAUSED by CAPITALISM. Wealth has been created by people discovering and sharing technology. not capitalism. Closed ownership of natural resources has stifled morality and promoted inequality.
how about responsible Captitalism?
Capitalism works fine. Too many of the types that read your tripe think they know how we should run our lives better than we do. Interfering busybodies are the reason we’re struggling. Not capitalism.
It has many faults. BUT socialism/communism has not worked anywhere (ok Cuba produced lots of health professional but...). You say it has not been tried properly. If the Chinese could not make a socialist/communist economy work no one can!!
Capitalism is EXACTLY the reason so many people around the WORLD have been lifted out of poverty.
Only Corruption.
Harm to billionaires. Good
America was not built on just capitalism ,you can not have capitalism without some socialism and you cannot have all socialism without some capitalism ..there has to be a well balance of capitalism and socialism to make any country great...we all must open our minds.❤
alllibertynews Why not compare and contrast statist/corporatist companies vs, and aversion to, enterprise
HA ! It doesn't work because its fundamentally flawed not because it needs a tweek. God has demonstrated through the climateemergency that your designs are not only wrong but deliberately harmful to life on earth. extinctionrebellion
How many pillows do I need to get good sleep?

Brilliant article ... glad that the world order is rising to the long ignored failures of the system ...
Will socialism and communism take place of capitalism soon or later?😏😏😏😏
good ✍️🌎capitalism 👎🌍👎🌏👎🤔
When the workers understood that the bosses did not have skin in the game like they do, the shift started. It is workers who build company value, not the CEO's and the tiny number of stockholders. Stakeholders includes the workers. Get used to it.
Socialism is good at the big stuff. Rail, roads, ports, healthcare, cell and internet pipes. Managing that which is too big or too important to allow to be corrupted by profit motive. Military, police, fire, governments, etc. BOTH econ systems compliment the other well.
Capitalism always works, it’s the politicians and their socialistic policies, agendas and freebies are hurting it.
Capitalism does small stuff well. When there is competition and low barriers to entry. Products are better, prices lower, and innovation! But we don't really have any of that do we? It's all very big and chummy.
if you hate capitalism you are really gonna hate it's replacement.
This is all just a cloak to communism.
the c word you're looking for is consolidation, as in wealth and power consolidating in the hands of too few while everyone else is left to fight for the remaining scraps. Oh and btw... that's been manufactured by design to be that way, and yes, it's what capitalism allows for
Capitalism is on the verge of falling.
Nice article
If you spell 'Capitalism' with a 'C' ....you are blind🙃
'El culpable, según Castro, era un sistema económico que había hecho de la rapiña, el crecimiento descontrolado y el extractivismo a los países más pobres su principal motor de desarrollo. Hoy sus palabras parecen premonitorias
CAPITALISM WORKS GREAT!
Perpetual growth with no regard for planet will be the death of all of us
When has Capitalism ever worked?
Counterpoint: We've tried non-collective capitalism for over 50 years. Maybe it's time to shake things up.

More cheaper weapons to wipe out China?

Capitalism works perfectly. What you may be confused about is thinking we’re a capitalistic economy.
“Specialists” paid for “studies” by large capitalist conglomerates affirm: gasoline is good to put out fires.
Companies must know that investing in social and environmental matters is the only way to sustain future growth and income for themselves.
'A system of state and state-sponsored megacorps crushing competition and bloating markets through regulatory overreach is not working as well as it should.' Fixed it for you.
This is a simplistic juxtaposition between two faux ideal types.
You want socialism. I don’t. I like innovation. It is so exciting 🎊. Cutting edge.
If collective capitalism is harming how would it help if you're expanding decision making to shareholders?
Great piece. You can't alleviate critics by adopting their ways.
Capitalism has been sidelined by corporation. Amazon. Google. Facebook
End the practice of counterfeiting currency aka Fractional Reserve Banking
“Collective capitalism is a capitalist socialization of production, but only in a distorted manner. It cannot be considered socialist because the means of production belongs to corporations.” 🤔
let me tell you some, capitalism died, useless reanimate the fried fish, take care
I can't believe anyone takes you seriously anymore.
Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom's depiction in 1614 of competing British East India Company and Dutch East India Company ships, both with monopolies to trade. Other chartered corporations, still in existence include the Hudson’s Bay Company (est 1670) and the Bank of England (est 1694).
Main question: is Bolshevism “human” ? And additional arise natural : capitalism is human ?
How about a little less selfish sociopathy and more compassion. That would be a more enlightened capitalism.
you won't be able to save capitalism
Donald Trump : ' For a financial contribution from ALL car manufacturers and oil industry to the maintenance and securing of public roads paid by taxpayers. They alone have allowed the growth of these industries with dividends EXCLUSIVELY private '
Tweets like this sjw drivel is why I cancelled my 'The Economist' subscription. Capitalism at work. Doesn't work too well for you, , eh?
Good for the many or good for the few? Good for the planet or good for its parasites?
What do you call what we have always had? Some form of collective capitalism? These are too easy.
Its all in peak management, China picks telegenic CEOs for its nation, America picks celebrity recognition that crowds out technocratic expertise. Collective Capitalism in China is races ahead, while private Capitalism is stalled in defensive populism with nil economist expertise
Reminds me of when starbucks wanted to talk about race. 5 bucks for a cup of coffee and they dictate what’s supposed to be on our mind while trying to relax on overpriced coffee. Good intentions but Starbucks had few minorities in senior management. Focus on the balance sheet.
