Taxidermy is pretty lucrative in South Africa

Taxidermy is a lucrative business in South Africa, attracting a large number of local and international clients.

JOHANNESBURG - Taxidermy is a lucrative business in South Africa, attracting a large number of local and international clients. He specialises in big cats and works on up to 2,500 animals a year for both local and international clients.Though the lion's share of this industry is in the US, taxidermy is pretty lucrative in South Africa too due to regular and direct access to wild animals.

Good infrastructure and a low exchange rate also contribute to growing the local industry, which is worth around R600-million a year. "Because of the illegal hunting, the problems we have with rhino and elephant poaching etcetera, it's created a worldwide environment which is now hitting us with such tremendous restrictions that we cannot freely do our work," said Kretzschmar."We can't employ more people, we could if we weren't so restricted, but at the moment it's really, really difficult."

The industry has come under fire from animal rights groups, but Kretzschmar argues his work is above board and claims the game farming industry his business is part of has been a key contributor to animal conservation.
