Exclusion from government Covid-19 relief has left many reliant on private food donations, as fears raised over protection from transmission after lockdown

Rasheeda Bibi has five rupees to her name. A worker in India’s sex industry, she lives in the narrow lanes of Kolkata’s Kalighat red light area with her three children in a room she rents for 620 rupees a month. It is now a month since India went into total lockdown on 26 March to contain the spread of Covid-19. With no clients, Bibi’s savings have dwindled. She has no money left for food, or sanitary towels for herself and her daughters, let alone for fixing the roof.

apneaap 'Women & children in red light areas are without food, living in cage-like rooms with no window & no running water... We immediately distributed 5,000 cooked meals. We need to serve 1.1 million meals to the 2,500 families we serve in the red-light areas'

I’m sure ours aren’t doing so well either. I don’t think pimps are getting small business loans.

Does india have a sex industry? Never knew that!

😔

Is India still planning to build it's own Space Station ?

The precarious situation is appalling, but the Government of India has arranged for three months of free ration for all citizens through the PradhanMantriGaribKalyanYojana.

Typical Guardian copy.

You mean this sex worker .

I wonder how many Indian sex workers read the Guardian? Perhaps this article is aimed at Oxfam execs.
