U.S. stocks rose Wednesday ahead of comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and on hopes of progress with a coronavirus treatment

Sentiment was also boosted by news from Gilead Sciences that a clinical trial evaluating its drug remdesivir in coronavirus patients had concluded with a positive result. Gilead share rose about 6%.

“The gains also coincided with a statement from Gilead Sciences saying that a clinical trial evaluating its drug remdesivir in coronavirus patients had concluded with a positive result, sending shares in the biotech company up sharply in premarket trading.”
