High school graduates entered the labor market this summer during a deep economic downturn. But many of these young, flexible workers are finding jobs.

Teenage workers were among the hardest hit by the pandemic this spring because they are concentrated in fields that suffered the most fromand restrictions: low-wage, in-person service jobs in locations such as restaurants and retail stores. But since April, teen employment has grown much faster than that of the overall workforce, in part because some older workers are reluctant to take entry-level jobs.

Job openings for those with just a high-school education and little work experience are on the rise, according to job boards and staffing companies. The unemployment rate for those 16 to 19 years old fell to 16.1% in August—just below the long-run average since 1948—
