With these new features, Slack is iterating on what it does best—taking popular consumer media formats and normalizing their use in office settings

. While instant messaging services like AIM had been popular long before Slack first its enterprise software in 2013, Slack nevertheless transformed the way office workers communicate—not so much through technical innovation, but by integrating the use of a familiar, informal communication format into the workplace.

Modern office communication would be hardly recognizable to workers from even 15 years ago, thanks in no small part to all the GIFS, , and memes now circulating on Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Chat. Slack's latest features, particularly asynchronous video, represent a canny product design choice.
